When will Palakkad Medical College start functioning?

Almost all the construction work for the proprietary Palakkad Medical College has been completed. Two years ago, classes for MBBS students commenced, but the medical college has yet to begin functioning fully due to a lack of necessary systems, medical equipment, etc. Currently, the medical students are utilizing the Government District Hospital for their practical sessions.

If you want to know when will Palakkad Medical College start functioning? This is the right post for you.

With the Lok Sabha election in Kerala approaching, scheduled for April 26, 2024, the Kerala government is expediting procedures to commence the functioning of the Palakkad Medical College before the polling date.

As of now, the inauguration of Palakkad Medical College is scheduled for before April 20, 2024. Work on various departments including Pulmonary, Cardiac, and Neuroscience, as well as laboratory facilities and ambulance services, is currently in progress.

The Inpatient IP department was inaugurated on March 12th, 2024

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the IP (InPatient) department on March 12th, 2024. It’s the first phase with limited facilities. The second phase will be inaugurated soon before the Loksabha election in Kerala already decided to be held on 26th April 2024.

The project under SC/ST was initiated 10 years ago

The Palakkad Medical College was announced by the Oommen Chandy government in their budget ten years ago. This project is part of the development initiatives aimed at benefiting Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, given the significant SC/ST population in the Palakkad district of Kerala.

Currently, residents of the district must travel to either Thrissur district or Coimbatore district in Tamil Nadu for medical treatment. Even in the private sector, there are limited facilities available in the area. Consequently, the Oommen Chandy government took the initiative to announce the establishment of a medical college hospital for the second-largest district in Kerala a decade ago.

All construction work began immediately. Initially, a couple of years ago, it commenced with consultations in a few departments. However, admissions did not begin due to a lack of equipment, operation theaters, pharmacy facilities, labs, etc. Only consultations and basic health check-ups were conducted.

During the COVID times, they have only started some basic check-ups, and they haven’t begun functioning with admitted patients.

Location

The location of the medical college is situated just beneath National Highway 544, approximately 4 km away from Palakkad town. When traveling from Palakkad to Thrissur, you can spot it on the left side of NH 544.

This location is convenient for residents from various regions of Palakkad, ensuring easy and quick access to the hospital.

Since the location is far from Palakkad city, we don’t care about the city traffic. It just situated just beneath the national highway, and the roads to the hospital are of having enough width, no need to worry about traffic. Within the compound, there is a huge space in the ground.

Facilities and infrastructures

The Medical College has an excellent academic infrastructure including modern classrooms equipped with advanced audio and visual instruments to enhance the high-class learning experience. Very spacious lecture halls and seminar rooms make it students to experience interactive sessions and seminars.

The library is another facility that is an integral part of any college, especially for a Medical college. Loaded with a ton of medical records and books that are needed for the students to learn more about the syllabus.

When it comes to treatment, the Government has already set up all of the medical equipment that is needed to smooth the working of a Medical college hospital.

In the initial days of the Medical college hospital after the first batch, but before the treatment started, all the students were the outpatients had to go to the nearest Palakkad District hospital for some medical check-ups and practical sessions. This got very poor drawbacks from both the students and the patients. Against this, the students and the opposing political students came to get the best facility to study and for treatment.

As the minister Radhakrishnan took action to solve the issue, they have the best infrastructure now.

Staff and expertise

since the last 6 months, more recruitment has been done as the medical college started functioning with more departments,s and bedded treatment started a couple of months ago. Some recruitments are done based on employment exchange in a temporary basis, and some department recruitment has been done by the expert panel of the medical directorate.

All the vacant posts and permanent posts have been reported to the Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC), but it will take some more time to call for the vacant posts, written exams, valuation, and recruitment.

Hope all the recruitment will be done within 2 years by the PSC.

Hope this article is enough to get the details about the Government Medical College Palakkad, and I will add more details when a new updates is available. Keep update with the post or bookmark it.
